Is the world "elder" disrespectful when referring to an older person?

In my health midterm I used the word "elder" and my teacher docked me a full mark because it was "disrespectful". I normally wouldn't care but I used it about 8 times in my essay. Is "elder" a rude word when referring to someone in there 70s-90s ? If so what's a better word?
