If someone you loved was victimized by ual violence would you encourage them to report to the police?

If the abuser is actually charged this possibly mean years of judicial proceduresnot to mention people making all kinds of cruel remarks such as victim was at fault or maybe falsely accusing. Or would you suggest to just go for counselling and work through issues ociated with this crime?
