first off, let me make it very clear that i am a very open minded christian, who has made my own conclusion. man has written that book, men are flawed, and i guarantee you that the book is flawed as well. and as far as being a jealous god, i think they may have meant it in the context of: "god" would prefer things went as "he" had "planned".
