Anything I can do for dry, damaged hair at home?

Well I dyed my hair like once this year and I have a hair appointment in a few weeks, But I really want to make it better without having like two inches cut off because my ends are SO bad. :/ It looks HORRIBLE. Anything I can do? My mom suggested lotion but I don't know.
